An ocean‑facing apothecary

A precise,
daily ritual.

Jeannie’s composes skincare with the restraint of an industrial apothecary — cold-pressed botanicals, marine-derived hydration and a small, considered range of objects for the basin.

001 · Philosophy Est. MMXXIV

Skincare is, at heart, a small daily devotion. We have tried to make it worth the time.

We compose each formula in our Wellington laboratory with a chemist’s sobriety and a perfumer’s patience. Ingredients are sourced singly — avocado pressed in Hawke’s Bay, hyaluronic fractions from cold-water diatoms, vitamin E expressed from sunflower seed — and combined only when the result is measurably better than its parts.

What we choose to leave out is, by deliberate design, longer than what we put in: synthetic fragrance, silicone occlusion, decorative actives. The remaining objects are few, useful, and intended to sit alongside one another for a long time.

002 · The Formulary 5 Objects
003 · The Ingredient System Three Anchors

A vocabulary of materials, considered one by one.

Every Jeannie’s formula is built from a short list of single-origin actives. We publish their provenance, their function, and what they are not asked to do.

Hass Avocado Oil Persea americana

A cold-pressed lipid rich in oleic acid and phytosterols. Restores the skin’s outermost lipid film without occlusive heaviness.

Tea Tree Distillate Melaleuca alternifolia

A clarifying steam distillate. Calms reactive skin and supports a balanced surface flora without astringency.

Inner-leaf Aloe Aloe barbadensis

A polysaccharide-dense gel pressed from the inner leaf. Hydrates and softens at the surface during a brief contact cleanse.

004 · The Daily Ritual Morning · Evening

A four-step rhythm, repeated quietly.

The objects are designed to work in a specific order, at a specific pace. Treat each step as its own moment; the formulas will do the rest.

A philosophy
001

A cleanser’s only ambition should be to leave skin clean and intact. Ours does precisely that — and very little else.

Most facial cleansers are over-formulated. They foam aggressively, leave the skin acutely dry, and pretend this is evidence of effort. Clarifying Face Wash is built on the opposite premise: that an effective cleanser is gentle enough to use twice daily, neutral enough to wear no scent of its own, and considered enough to leave the lipid mantle undisturbed. Avocado oil softens, low-molecular hyaluronic fragment hydrates, vitamin E quiets oxidation. There is nothing else.

A ritual of use
003

A short sequence, twice daily. Treat the basin as a quiet room.

01

Wet the skin with cool water

Cooler temperatures preserve the lipid mantle and reduce reactive flushing in sensitised complexions.

10 seconds
02

Dispense one pump

Warm the formula between the fingertips. A single pump is sufficient for face and neck.

One pump
03

Work in slow circles for thirty seconds

Allow the surfactants to gather rather than scrub. Concentrate around the nose, hairline, and jaw.

30 seconds
04

Rinse, then press dry with linen

Press — do not drag. Follow immediately with Hydrating Cream while the skin is still slightly damp.

A short reference library of every material we use, the form in which we use it, and the products it appears in. Jeannie’s declares all concentrations above 0.1% by weight; the carton repeats the same list.

Group 01
Hydration

The materials that hold water at the surface and beneath it.

Hyaluronic Fragment
Sodium hyaluronate, < 50 kDa

A short-chain humectant drawn from biofermentation. Holds water at the upper stratum corneum and, at low molecular weight, draws a small amount deeper into the skin.

Humectant
Inner-leaf Aloe
Aloe barbadensis

A polysaccharide-dense gel pressed from the inner leaf. Hydrates and softens the surface during the brief contact time of a cleanse.

Humectant
Glycerol
Vegetable-derived

A small-molecule humectant drawing atmospheric water into the upper layers of the skin. The most economical, most evidence-backed hydrator we use.

Humectant
Group 02
Repair

Lipids and emollients that restore what the day removes.

Hass Avocado Oil
Persea americana

A cold-pressed lipid rich in oleic acid and phytosterols. Restores the outermost lipid film without occlusive heaviness; sits soft on the skin.

Emollient
Plant Squalane
Olive-derived, fully saturated

A skin-identical lipid that mimics human sebum. Slips into the lipid matrix without trace and improves the spreadability of any oil phase.

Jojoba Oil
Simmondsia chinensis

A liquid wax-ester nearly identical in structure to human sebum. Lifts atmospheric soil and the residue of sun protection without disturbing the lipid mantle.

Solvent · Emollient
Camellia Oil
Camellia oleifera

A cold-pressed lipid long used in Japanese skincare. Rich in oleic acid and phytosterols; light, non-occlusive, neutral in scent.

Emollient
Group 03
Brightening

Materials for tone, evenness, and the slow correction of pigment.

An antioxidant in its own right; more importantly, the stabiliser that extends the working half-life of ascorbic acid by an order of magnitude.

Stabiliser
Group 04
Protection

UV cover and antioxidant tiers that disarm the day’s exposure.

Zinc Oxide
Non-nano, mineral

A broad-spectrum mineral UV filter. Reflects and scatters UVA and UVB without skin penetration; the only filter we use, at the highest concentration permitted.

UV Filter
Vitamin E Complex
Tocopherol, tocotrienol

A full-spectrum antioxidant expressed from sunflower seed. Stabilises every lipid phase we formulate and disarms environmental oxidation through the day.

Antioxidant
Green Tea Extract
Camellia sinensis

A polyphenol-rich concentrate, EGCG-led. Quenches the reactive oxygen species generated by UV exposure; layered beneath our mineral filter.

Antioxidant
Tea Tree Distillate
Melaleuca alternifolia

A clarifying steam distillate. Calms reactive skin and supports a balanced surface flora without the astringency of an essential-oil dose.

Clarifying
A short list, by deliberate design.

What we choose
to leave out.

Jeannie’s formulas contain no synthetic fragrance, no silicones, no SLS/SLES, no PEGs above molecular weight 400, no chemical UV filters. The list of materials we have considered and discarded is, by deliberate design, far longer than the list we publish.

004 · The Five Objects Used across both rhythms

Each object knows when it belongs.

Five products, sixteen steps. The same objects appear in both rhythms; only the quantity and order changes.

005 · On Consistency Editorial

A ritual is not what you do once. It is what you do, quietly, every day.

The clinical literature on skincare is, in the end, an argument for consistency. The most expensive serum applied sporadically will be outperformed by the simplest moisturiser applied twice a day for a year. The skin’s renewal cycle is roughly twenty-eight days; meaningful change in tone, barrier integrity, or pigment requires three full cycles at minimum — about ninety days — before it is visible.

Jeannie’s small range is designed for that horizon. Five objects, two rhythms, used twice a day, every day, for as long as the skin lasts. The ritual is the active ingredient; the formulas only do what they are asked to do.

Jeannie’s · The House

An ocean‑facing apothecary.

Jeannie’s was founded on a single premise: that a skincare practice should be as quiet as the basin it lives beside. Few objects. Clear ingredients. No theatre.

001 · The House Philosophy
001 · Modern Apothecary Wellington, MMXXIV
What an apothecary is, today

The apothecary was, for centuries, the compound of function. Ours is the same.

The word once described a place of measured dispensing — of materials combined at the correct concentration, for a specific purpose, by someone who understood the chemistry. It carried no decorative intent. The objects on the shelf were earned by their efficacy.

We hold ourselves to that original standard. Each Jeannie’s formula is composed to do a single thing well. The packaging announces the contents; the contents justify the price. Nothing is present for the shelf.

002 · Formulation Ethos The shorter list

What we choose to leave out is the longer list.

Every ingredient in a Jeannie’s formula was admitted by passing a single test: does its presence make the product measurably better for the skin? Fragrance, colour, film-forming polymers, occlusive silicones — all considered; all declined.

The result is a formulary of five objects, each composed of fewer than ten materials, each published in full. We believe the concentration of every active above 0.1% by weight belongs in the public record. It appears on every carton.

No synthetic fragrance No silicone occlusion No chemical UV filters No SLS · SLES
003 · Sensory Philosophy Scent · Texture · Sensation

Scent is architecture, not ornamentation.

Where Jeannie’s objects carry an aroma, it is intrinsic to the formula — the cold-pressed avocado that lends Hydrating Cream its faint cedar note; the sea buckthorn that gives Glow Vitamin Serum its characteristic amber. No additional fragrance is added. None is needed.

Texture, similarly, is functional. Clarifying Face Wash emulsifies milky on contact with water because that is what a complete rinse requires. The cleansing oil turns the same milky white for the same reason. The serum dries to a matte finish because the film must settle before the next object is applied. Every sensory property serves the formula.
